More on OIL PULLING and why you should start to day!

Oil Pulling -the Research

Study #1: Oil pulling can reduce plaque and gingivitis

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue and is one of the most common diseases among the population. This is actually a real epidemic – about 95% adults suffer from periodontal disease of some degree during their lifetime. The source of the infection is bacteria that inhabit the oral cavity, infect the teeth (plaque), hardened and become tartar.

A 2009 study was conducted to compare oil pulling and chlorhexidine (a synthetic compound used as a mild antiseptic) in adolescents with plaque-induced gingivitis. Both oil pulling and chlorhexidine mouthwash were effective against gingivitis.

The researchers concluded: “The oil pulling therapy showed a reduction in the plaque index, modified gingival scores and total colony count of aerobic microorganisms in the plaque of adolescents with plaque-induced gingivitis.”

Study #2: Oil pulling can reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth

Streptococcus Mutans is one of the main bacteria in the mouth and a key player in plaque buildup and tooth decay.

In a study from 2008 with 20 boys, oil pulling (using coconutoil) caused a reduction in the number of Streptococcus Mutans in the plaque in as little as 2 weeks. The researchers concluded that “Oil pulling can be used as an effective preventive adjunct in maintaining and improving oral health”

Study #3: Oil pulling and dental disease

A research paper that was published in the African Journal of Microbiology Research in 2008 concluded: “The effect of oil-pulling on the reduction of total count of bacteria was determined. There was a remarkable reduction in the total count of bacteria. The process of oil-pulling reduced the susceptibility of a host to dental caries.”

Oil Pulling Using Cold Pressed Oils

This technique involves the use of cold pressed oils to pull harmful bacteria and other organisms out of the mouth, tongue, teeth and gums. Sesame oil, sunflower oil, and Virgin Coconut oil are the most recommended oils.

Other oils such as extra virgin olive oil or flaxseed have been used too. In any case, using high quality organic oil into the mouth is critical to the effectiveness of this practice. The role of the oil is to pull out toxins from the saliva and acts like an antiseptic mouth wash.

The Practice of Oil Pulling itself is very Simple

Take about 1tablespoon of oil when you wake up in the morning and before you eat anything. Swish the oil around your mouth, teeth, gums and tongue for about 15-20 minutes (yes, this is not a mistake – you can do it while you prepare yourself for the morning to come, while in the shower, watch TV, or while doing work around the house to help pass the time).

During that time the oil will have changed its color to whiter or yellowish color. Don’t swallow the oil, as the whole aim is to get rid of toxins, so if you swallow any oil, you put the toxins back into your body.

After 15-20 minutes spit all the oil out (it is recommended not to dispose the oil in the sink drain or the toilet, as the oil accumulates and can clog the pipes).

After spiting all the oil, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and brush your teeth as usual and floss. After this is done, you can drink and eat as usual.

Oil Pulling and Dental/Oral health

(Culled from Natural Society)

Most people are at least aware of the idea behind eating certain foods, exercising, and avoiding toxic chemicals to maintain overall health. Indeed, consuming powerful, health-boosting foods and avoiding unhealthy junk is a great way to stay healthy, but there are also some very specific techniques which can be utilized to achieve numerous health benefits. Among these techniques is a lesser known one called oil pulling. What is oil pulling, anyway – and what are the oil pulling benefits?

What Is Oil Pulling, Anyway?
Used in ancient Ayurvedic medicine, oil pulling is an Indian remedy used primarily to enhance oral health and cleanse the body. Thankfully, the process of oil pulling is actually quite simple, harmless, and very inexpensive. Simply take one tablespoon of a pure, organic virgin coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. Move the oil around your mouth through sipping, sucking, and essentially pulling through your teeth. After rinsing, spit out the oil, thoroughly rinse your mouth out with water.
During this process, the oil mixes with the saliva, creating a thin, white liquid. Swishing activates the enzymes, and the enzymes draw toxins out of the blood. More specifically, lipids in the oil help to extract toxins from the saliva of the mouth. As you swish the oil around your mouth, teeth, gums, and tongue, the oil continues to absorb toxins while later turning thick and white. At this point, the oil becomes toxic; this is why spitting the oil out instead of swallowing it is an important last step, as you don’t want to reabsorb the toxins. While you can do this process anytime during the day, it is most beneficial upon rising, before eating or brushing your teeth.

While some individuals have had some success by using oils such as Sesame and olive, the most popular and effective oils by far to use for oil pulling is Virgin Coconut Oil.

Oil Pulling Benefits
As mentioned, the primary reasons for oil pulling is to remove bacteria, parasites and other toxins from your teeth and mucus membranes, and detoxify. One study showcases the oil pulling benefits on the oral level, where oil pulling with Virgin Coconut oil was shown to reduce the amount of streptococcus mutans in both teeth plaque and mouth saliva, and boost overall health. Another study also shows how oil pulling can result in a significant reduction in total bacteria count.

As reported by Dr. Group of Global Healing Center, oil pulling benefits on an oral level also include:

Overall strengthening of the teeth and gums and jaws.
Prevention of diseases of the gums and mouth, such as cavities and gingivitis.
Prevention of overall tooth decay
Natural whitening of teeth and plaque removal
Prevention for bad breath
Potential holistic remedy for bleeding gums
Prevention of dryness of the lips, mouth and throat.
Possible holistic treatment for TMJ and general soreness in the jaw area.
In addition to the benefits of oil pulling surrounding oral health, this ancient therapy also has a number of positive effects on the body. According to an article previously published on The Hindu Business Online (but seems to have been moved or removed), one doctor, Dr. F. Karsch, M.D., presented a paper to the All-Ukrainian Association outlining rather incredible possibilities oil pulling is capable of. Going by Dr. Karsch, oil pulling benefits can help with almost any illness or chronic condition, including:

Mouth & gum disease; stiff joints; allergies; asthma; high blood sugar; constipation; migraines; bronchitis; eczema; heart, kidney, lung diseases; leukemia; arthritis; meningitis; insomnia; menopause (hormonal issues); cancer;  chronic infections; varicose veins; high blood pressure; diabetes; cracked heels; acne, arthritis; bronchitis; dermatitis; sinusitis; and many more.

Whether you choose to use oil pulling to help
treat other conditions or not, the benefits of oil pulling surrounding oral health and detoxification certainly make the therapy worthwhile.

THE Health Benefits of MCT's (medium chain triglycerides) and Why Virgin Coconut Oil.Part 2

MCTs and Appetite Control
MCTs have been shown to suppress appetite, an ability of obvious benefit for those attempting to lower their intake of total calories. In one 14-day study, six healthy male volunteers were allowed unlimited access to one of three diets: a low MCT diet, a medium MCT diet, and a high MCT diet. Caloric consumption was significantly lower on the high MCT diet. The researchers noted that substituting MCTs for other fats in a high-fat diet “can limit the excess energy intakes and weight gain produced by high-fat, energy-dense diets.”

MCTs and Atherosclerosis
MCTs have a number of properties that may be beneficial in preventing atherosclerosis. Among these are that MCTs have anti-coagulation effects, and have been shown to lower serum cholesterol. In addition, MCTs reduce levels of cholesterol in the liver and other tissues. MCTs have also been reported to act as antioxidants and reduce tissue requirements for Vitamin E.

MCTs as Medicine for Alzheimer's disease & Others(culled from webmd)
MCTs are used along with usual medications for treating food absorption disorders including diarrheasteatorrhea (fat indigestion) celiac disease, liver disease, and digestion problems due to partial surgical removal of the stomach (gastrectomy) or the intestine (short bowel syndrome).
MCTs are also used for “milky urine” (chyluria) and a rare lung condition called chylothorax. Other uses include treatment of gallbladder disease, AIDS, cystic fibrosis,Alzheimer's disease, and seizures in children.
MCTs are sometimes used as a source of fat in total parenteral nutrition (TPN). In TPN, all food is delivered intravenously (by IV). This type of feeding is necessary in people whose gastrointestinal (GI) tract is no longer working.
Intravenous MCTs are also given to prevent muscle breakdown in critically ill patients.MCTs are a fat source for patients who cannot tolerate other types of fats. Researchers believe that these fats produce chemicals in the body that help fight Alzheimer's disease.

Why Virgin COCONUT Oil (VCO)?
Virgin Coconut oil composes of saturated, mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids (SFA: MUFA: PUFA) at a ratio of 86.5: 5.8: 1.8 fats.A major portion of its saturated fats are medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s) or medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA’s), ranging from 6-12 carbon atoms. The MCT’s in this oil are lauric acid (C-12), capric acid (C-10), caprylic acid (C-8) and caproic acid (C-6). Together, they constitute 68% of total saturated and 59% of total fat content.
Lauric acid, being a 12-carbon saturated fat, constitutes the major portion of MCTs. 100 g virgin coconut oil contains 44.6 g of lauric acid, constituting more than 45% of total fat content.
Virgin Coconut oil in its unprocessed, non-heated,unfractionated state is one of the healthiest fats on the planet being loaded with beneficial fatty acids called medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). These MCTs or MCFAs (medium chain fatty acids) do not need to be digested by bile salts, which are secreted by the liver and stored by the gall bladder (hint: this is why coconut oil is a really good fat for those who’ve had surgery)
Aside Virgin Coconut oil one can only find Lauric acid in breast Milk!
So to get the full benefit of Virgin Coconut oil ensure that you buy it organic and non-heated.

THE Health Benefits of MCT's (medium chain triglycerides) and Why Virgin Coconut Oil.

What is Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs)?

Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) or Medium-Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs) are a unique form of dietary fat that impart a wide range of positive health benefits. Nevertheless, the potential anti-aging properties of MCTs have been largely unrecognized by many life extension enthusiasts. Dietary fats are molecules composed of individual carbon atoms linked into chains ranging from 2 to 22 carbon atoms in length. Long Chain Fatty acids (LCTs) ranging from 12 to 18 carbons long are the predominant form of fat in our diet. MCTs, by contrast, are composed of only 6 to 10 carbon links. Because of their shorter chain length, MCTs have a number of unique properties which give them advantages over the more common LCTs. MCTs provide about ten percent fewer calories than LCTs – 8.3 calories per gram for MCTs versus 9 calories per gram for LCTs. But this is just one of the unique advantages of MCTs. (2) More importantly, reduced chain length also means that MCTs are more rapidly absorbed by the body and more quickly metabolized (burned) as fuel. The result of this accelerated metabolic conversion is that instead of being stored as fat, the calories contained in MCTs are very efficiently converted into fuel for immediate use by organs and muscles.

MCTs and Exercise
The energy-enhancing properties of MCTs are attributed to the fact that they cross the double mitochondrial membrane very rapidly, and do not require the presence of carnitine, as do LCTs. The result is an excess of acetyl-coA, which then follows various metabolic pathways, both in the mitochondria (Krebs Cycle) and in the cytosol, resulting in the production of ketones. Scientists attribute the increased energy from consumption of MCTs to the rapid formation of ketone bodies. MCTs are thus a good choice for anyone who has increased energy needs, as following major surgery, during normal or stunted growth, to enhance athletic performance, and to counteract the decreased energy production that results from aging.
In recent years MCTs have gained in popularity with athletes seeking to increase energy levels and enhance endurance during high-intensity exercise, as well as serving as an alternative energy source for athletes on high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets. Researchers have previously shown that MCTs can increase physical endurance in animal studies. In swimming capacity tests, mice fed a diet containing MCTs outperformed mice fed a diet containing LCTs. (3) The researchers noted that the muscles of mice fed the MCTs produced higher levels of key metabolic enzymes (3-oxo acid CoA-transferase, citrate synthase and malate dehydrogenase) involved in the Krebs cycle (tricarboxylic acid cycle), the body’s primary energy production mechanism. MCT-fed mice also burned fat at a higher rate to enhance cellular energy production.
MCTs and Weightloss
MCTs lower caloric content than LCTs, MCTs are not stored in fat deposits in the body as much as LCTs. Furthermore, MCTs have been shown to enhance thermogenesis (i.e., fat burning). So MCTs seem to offer a triple approach to weight loss – they (1) have a lower calorie content than other fats, (2) are minimally stored as fat, and (3) contribute to enhanced metabolism to burn even more calories. This third property may be due to the fact that MCTs behave metabolically in some fashion similar to carbohydrates, as well as their promoting the development of ketones, as mentioned above. Ketone production is a cornerstone of the Atkins Diet, and MCTs may enable those following the Atkins’ program to more rapidly obtain benefits and more easily adhere to the program. Ketones are also one of the two substances which the brain can utilize for energy (glucose, being the other). Dr. Hans Kaunitz speculated that for this reason, MCTs might be advantageous for the aging brain.
MCTs and Immune boosting
To evaluate the immune-normalizing properties of MCTs, Kaunitz and colleagues injected rats with rabbit immune serum, known to cause severe autoimmune kidney disease in the rats. They then administered MCT in the diet, and noted that the pathological changes in the kidneys were much reduced in the MCT-treated group. Kaunitz speculated that MCTs could thus have a positive effect “on autoimmune reactions characteristic of the aging process.”MCTs have proven useful in treating a number of medical disorders that involve impaired or damaged lipid (fat) metabolism. These include: obstructive jaundice, biliary cirrhosis, pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, Whipple’s disease, Crohn’s disease, regional enteritis, and malabsorption in neonates. MCT has been reported to be useful for feeding of newborn infants, to both assist their initial growth and to contribute to their physiological development. The absorption of calcium and magnesium appears to be enhanced when the diet contains MCTs, particularly in infants, and the absorption of amino acids also appears to be improved. Thus, MCTs can be a useful addition to the diet of those suffering from any form of malnutrition or tissue wasting. In this regard, MCTs are often added to parenteral formulas for intravenous feeding following surgery or during recovery from severe injuries, burns and infections.

WHAT IS VIRGIN COCONUT OIL (VCO)

WHAT IS  VIRGIN COCONUT OIL?

Virgin coconut oil or VCO is derived through a "wet-milling" process. With this method, the oil is extracted from fresh coconut meat. "Coconut milk" is expressed first by pressing it out of the wet coconutmeat. The oil is then further separated from the water through the FERMENTATION Method. In the fermentation method the expressed coconut milk sits for a period of time, then the oil separates by allowing the heavier water to fall to the bottom of the container, while the lighter, crystal clear oil, remains on top. Coconut "curds" also form from coconut solids.

WHY IS VCO THE BEST?

There are other ways by which Coconut oil can be processed like:- Heat method,Refined/Hydrogenated Method and Expeller method but in  all these other methods the natural components of Organic coconut oil is distorted and most of the nutrients are lost.
1) Processing coconut oil through Heat Method kills the Lauric acid in coconut oil which is the main healthy component in Coconut oil and also other vitamins and minerals are lost in the process.
2) Refined/Hydrogenated Method, The coconut oil are made from copra. Copra is basically the dried kernel (meat) of the coconut. It can be made by smoke drying, sun drying, or kiln drying, or derivatives or a combination of these three. If standard copra is used as a starting material, the unrefined coconut oil extracted from copra is not suitable for consumption and must be purified, that is refined. This is because the way most copra is dried is not sanitary.
The standard end product made from copra is RBD coconut oil. RBD stands for refined, bleached, and deodorized. Steam is used to deodorize the oil, and the oil is typically filtered through (bleaching) clays to remove impurities. Sodium hydroxide is generally used to remove free fatty acids and prolong shelf life. This is the most common way to mass-produce coconut oil.
3) Expeller Method is the method of extracting oil with a mechanical press rather than utilizing a chemical extraction process. An expeller press is a screw type machine, which presses oil seeds through a caged barrel-like cavity. This machine uses friction and continuous pressure from the screw drives to move and compress the seed material. The oil seeds through small openings that do not allow seed fiber solids to pass through. Afterward, the pressed seeds are formed into a hardened cake, which is removed from the machine. Pressure involved in expeller pressing creates heat in the range of 140-210º F (60-99º C).This heat generated by the machine results to the same process in heat method.

SO VIRGIN COCONUT OIL Processed through the WET MILLING Method is the safest and healthiest because all the natural components are still intact especially the Lauric acid and it's able to give our body it's full MCT's (medium chain triglycerides) which are supposed to assimilate well in the body’s systems. Lauric acid being the chief contributor, representing more than forty percent of the total, followed by capric acid, caprylic acid, myristic acid and palmitic.
